Jimmy C.’s Story

Jimmy lives in Pittsfield, MA with his family and works part time at Goodwill Industries as a warehouse worker.  James joined the CPR and Nonotuck Resource Associates Supported Decision-Making (SDM) Project in October 2018.  Jimmy and his mother, Marie Cowell, learned about SDM from one of his friends, Cory Carlotto, who also participates in the CPR/Nonotuck SDM Project.

After Jimmy met with Nonotuck to discuss SDM, he was very happy to join the SDM project because he felt it was another step in obtaining and protecting his independence. Marie thought that SDM was the perfect model for Jimmy because it could help him keep his independence while strengthening the supports he needs. Marie was grateful for the opportunity to talk with another parent about the experience of supporting someone using the SDM model.

For his SDM team, Jimmy chose his mother Marie, his father Raymond, and his sister Shannon.  Since Jimmy has joined the SDM Pilot Project he has had many of his life goals come true.  He went to Texas to see his cousin and made the trip to the WWE WrestleMania 2019 with friends.  Jim leans on his team for help in understanding financial matters.

Jimmy competes in many state competitions through Special Olympics such as in golf, bowling and track and field.  He also plays non-competitive Special Olympics Basketball.  In his leisure time, Jimmy and his family enjoy fundraising for the Special Olympics through LETR events such as Cop on Top.  Jimmy also enjoys volunteering at St. Joseph church for the Polish Festival and for the Meals on Wheels program.

Jimmy feels that SDM has helped him become more of a leader and a decision maker.  Jimmy said that he likes to be in the driver’s seat making decisions about his life and taking on responsibility with support from his SDM Team.  Jimmy really enjoys being in the SDM project and is spreading the word about Supported Decision-Making to other peers.
