Chart on State Supported Decision-Making Agreement Laws in the U.S. (September 2026)

CPR has developed a chart on “Comprehensive Supported Decision-Making Laws in the United States.”  In this context, CPR considers “Comprehensive Supported Decision-Making Agreement Laws” to be state-enacted legislation that creates or directs the creation of a legal framework for supported decision-making (SDM) arrangements.  These legal frameworks may include various protections and indemnification provisions to promote recognition and enforcement of SDM agreements. As of September 2026, CPR has identified 24 States and the District of Columbia that have such legal frameworks. This chart provides a broad overview of some key trends within these laws, with citations to relevant statutes that provide further detail. This chart is being provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice.  Interested in learning about more trends? Email us at SDM@cpr-ma.org.
